FreeCEN
Equipment Required
Volunteers working for the FreeCEN Project will need regular access to a computer and to the means of displaying the source images which may variously be provided as micro-fiche, film or on CD.
A printer is useful for producing reference copies of various Instruction material but there is no requirement for quantity printing of any transcribed data.
While many volunteers start by using a public fiche/film reader (e.g. in a public library), and transcribe to paper for subsequent entry into the computer, this method is not conducive to undistracted progress with the work.
Many pre-used fiche readers are available for a nominal cost, or even free, and the mailing lists can suggest possible sources.
Software [7e] is provided for Windows operation, but can be run on other systems (eg. Apple-Mac) provided suitable "windows emulation" software is installed (Not available from FreeCEN).
Tutorials are provided with the software downloads from the Internet and will demonstrate the suitability of various computer systems for the FreeCEN requirements.
The SSCENS (spreadsheet) method can be run on any computer having a Spreadsheet routine capable of producing a "comma separated format" (.CSV or equivalent) output.
