VALCONV is needed only for application to work which may have been validated using the old VALCENS routine.
VALCONV must be used on such files before performing Post-Validation.
It will not affect (or damage) work validated using VALDREV.
The routine is quick-acting once the relevant prompts have been answered and examines the "VALCENS" file from a floppy disk.
After conversion the revised file is saved to the same floppy disk, the original file being renamed so that it may be retrieved if necessary for archive purposes.
Explanation:
The output from the VALCENS system contained two separate, but inter-acting, files. One contains the essential Validated Data and the other contains "Alternative Birthplaces" selected by the Validator.
It is not possible to insert or delete records in this system without upsetting the linking between these two files.
The VALDREV routine produces a single file containing all the data, which therefore can be edited as necessary during Post-Validation.
The output file from VALCONV complies with the structure of a VALDREV file - this is the only format acceptable for uploading data to the Internet FreeCEN Database.
